I haven't been able to update the blog as much as I would like due to many things to do and see, but I am now settled in the Iturrieta house. My host family has been great so far. Pablo, the father, is an ecological engineer of green spaces in cities. Maria, the mother, currently is working as an administrator for the Census 2012 in Vina del Mar. Joaquin, the son, is a 14 year old student that loves to play sports. Last night we all watched the Thunder beat Miami heat. It was wonderful. Javiera, the daughter, is ten years old and has the most beautiful eyes.
Classes have been going well so far and the days have been long but constantly entertaining. The family and I are doing well for the amount of Spanish I am able to converse in and we have great conversations about numerous subjects, from geometry to differing customs in both of our countries.
Below are pictures of the city of Santiago I have just recently been able to add. Enjoy!
A very very local restaurant in Santiago. We had a delicious dish made of potatoes and pork that had been marinated in special sauces and prepared with peppers.
The Department of Agriculture in Santiago. In Chile there are strict regulations regarding what can be brought into the country. Plants, animals, fruits, nuts, vegetables, etc have to be declared due to the fact that the Andes have kept the country relatively safe from invasive species.

An original flag of the Republic of Chile. Circa 1820's
Mining equipment. In northern Chile lies the Atacama desert which has many mineral resources. In the 19th century the area was mined for Potassium Nitrate used for making gunpowder. Now there are massive copper mines that make up 45% of Chile's exports
A Christian college. The sign in front features the embrace of both scientific and religious ideas.
A diorama of the major port city of Valparaiso. The city where I attend classes.
Chilean Boy Scouts in the 1940's
La Puerta Ochenta. Door 80 of the Moneda palace where Salvador Allende's body was removed after the military coup of 1973.
Hare Krishna's in front of the Mapuche statue in the Plaza De Armas.
Statuary...can't recall the story behind it.
The Catholic Church in the Plaza de Armas

Lebanese pine along Buena Vista ave. They are huge and it would be really cool to see a topiary of one of these trees.
The Mapoche River
Mis Amigas along Buena Vista Ave.
Pablo Neruda's house
At Neruda's house eyes were throughout the estate and he was one hell of an eclectic collector.
Chi Chi! Le Le! Vive Chile! Protests that want to bring some rights such as drums and other fan memorabilia back into stadiums. There is currently a law in place that does not allow for the things known as Al Plan de Estadio Seguridad.
Santiago Scraper
Rock Mural at Neruda's house
Street Murals
The Chilean Supreme Court. Thought my employer Judge Worthington would enjoy this.

Hola mi hijo! Some great photos from the cities of Santiago and Valparaiso. So does the Iturrieta familia live in Santiago- or Valparaiso? If it's Santiago, then you take a bus to class everyday or other mass transit? Send some pics of their family with you in them. Unless they are camera shy. . . Thanks for your updates. We know you are real busy. We enjoy them, believe me! Tu padre Juan.
